Rail rehabilitation between Krantzberg and Tsumeb progressing well
OTJIWARONGO – The rehabilitation and upgrading of the railway line between Kranzberg and Tsumeb by the D&M Rail Construction company is in top gear.

The Kranzberg railway station is situated between Usakos and Karibib in the Erongo Region, while Tsumeb is in the Oshikoto Region. D&M Rail Construction site agent Leon Steyn told Nampa on Thursday at the site about 12 kilometres south of Kalkfeld, that work on the railway line is progressing well.

When he spoke to this news agency in February this year when the work began, he said it is being conducted at three sites simultaneously the one at Kalkfeld, one near Otjiwarongo and one at Usakos (Kranzberg).

“We are moving pretty fast at our three sites, where we have dispatched groups of general workers,” he noted. Steyn’s company was sub-contracted by TransNamib last year to rehabilitate and upgrade the railway line between Kranzberg and Otjiwarongo.

He was, however, not willing to reveal the exact amount of money availed to his company for the completion of the job, and would only say that about N$95 million of this amount has been utilised so far.

D&M Rail Construction is also expected to start rehabilitating and upgrading the railway line between Otjiwarongo and Tsumeb.

He said to date, the company has rehabilitated over 80 kilometres of railway line between Usakos and Otjiwarongo, while about 24 kilometres was upgraded through the replacement of old rails with new material.

Some sections of the railway line at Kalkfeld were half-broken on the side, and need to be replaced with new materials.

The D&M Rail Construction workers were seen removing rails this week, and joining and replacing them with new materials.

D&M Rail Construction is employing over 300 general labourers from the areas of Otjiwarongo, Kalkfeld and Usakos for the rehabilitation and upgrading exercise.

The company is a Namibian chief specialist contractor of railway lines, and was founded in 1994.

It accepted an offer to partner with a group of previously-disadvantaged Namibians through a Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) deal, and was also involved in the construction of the railway line between Tsumeb, Ondangwa and Oshikango. – Nampa
