Papo wins final Cross Country Race
Xavier Papo won the sixth and final Cross Country race in the Rock and Rut Mountain Bike series, which took place close to the Waldorf School in Avis on Saturday.

Papo won the Elite Men’s category over five laps in a time of 1 hour 41 minutes 23 seconds, to finish nearly three minutes ahead of Gerhard Mans, who came second in 1:44:21. Charl Fouche finished third in 1:46:51.

Namibia’s national champion Heinrch Kohne could not complete the race after getting a flat tyre and damaging his wheel.

Jerneil Barth won the Junior Men’s category over four laps in 1:27:29, with Michael Pretorius coming second in 1:30:50 and Thorsten Kreft third in 1:32:30.

Pretorius and Martin Freyer, who did not complete the race, are both suffering from flu and were not at their best.

Tristan de Lange won the U16 Boys category over four laps in 1:14:33. De Lange also set the fastest lap time of the day with a time of 17:59.

Irene Steyn won the Elite Women’s category over four laps in 1:36:07, followed by Zoe Mitchell (1:45:45) and Bertha Theron (1:49:26).

Chelna Neethling won the Junior Women’s category over three laps in 1:26:06.

Meanwhile, Namibia’s top MTB riders will now prepare for the World MTB Championships which take place in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa from August 26 to September 1.

Namibia will be represented by Heinrich Kohne, Heiko Redecker, Martin Freyer, Michael Pretorius, Vera Adrian and Heletje van Staden.

Namibia will also have four participants at the World Masters MTB Championships in Pietermaritzburg from August 21 to 25, namely Nic du Plessis, Piet Swiegers, Jacques Celliers and Pierre Knoetze.
