Inline hockey season reaches halfway mark
Staff Reporter
THE Inline Hockey fraternity yesterday braced themselves for the start of an bumper third annual league tournament at the DTS sports grounds.

With 81 scheduled games, the tournament promises to provide quality clashes, featuring players that competed at the recent North American Roller Hockey Championships (NARCh) in Canada and the FIRS Senior World Championships.

Only three weeks ago these players were on the same team – now at home they will be pitted against one another for their respective clubs.

Top scorer of the Namibian Development Squad, Nichola Kühn, as well as top goalie Andriko von Ludwiger - both from Badgers – were yesterday expected to pit their skills against a DTS team that boasted the talented Pascal Stein in their ranks.

In the open men’s category, Gunnar Barth, Dominic Denker, Dylan Gollwitzer, Stefan Ihms and Rigo Eichhoff were up against their national senior men’s mates Nils Laggner for the Cazadores club.

Danielle Schmidt, who ended in the top five scorer bracket at the World Championships, heads the female section’s main attractions.

With national women’s team captain, Lisa-Leigh Jackman, Dietlind Förster and sisters Xenja and Tanja Brown also in the Badgers line-up, they are arguably the team to beat.

The atmosphere is expected to intensify once the Otjiwarongo Scorpions as well as Swakopmund-based Coastal Pirates join the fray at the weekend. With the halfway point reached and with teams harbouring ambitions to make it to the year-end Championships, the battle is well and truly on.
