South African women artists on exhibit at the NAGN
Since 2010, special efforts have been made by the National Art Gallery of Namibia (NAGN) in Windhoek to promote the visual arts in this country by organising exhibitions of work by women artists, not only in Namibia but also in neighbouring countries.
These efforts enjoy the full support of the South African National Association for the Visual Arts (SANAVA), as demonstrated by the 2012 exhibition by Namibian Women artists in the art gallery of the Association of Art Pretoria.
As a follow up to that initiative, the NAGN invited SANAVA and its branch, the Association of Arts Pretoria to hold an exhibition of work by South African women artists at the NAGN this month.
The exchange of these exhibitions should strengthen ties between South Africa and Namibia in the field of the visual arts, and further encourage the reciprocal sharing of skills between women artists in these two counties.
It is trusted that these initiatives should complement efforts to further a structured spirit of solidarity among visual artists in this part of Africa, which is an important objective of the International Association of Art (IAA), an NGO of Unesco.
Paid-up SANAVA branches and affiliated organisations were invited to supply the organisers with the names of South African women artists for the exhibition. This resulted in an exhibition of 35 artworks by top women artists from across South Africa.
The participating artists are Titia Ballot, Liberty Battson, Hanneke Benade, Lorraine Bezuidenhout, Tanisha Bhana, Alida Bothma, Majak Bredell, Nelly Byrne, Carla Crafford, Cleone Cull, Linky de Bruyn, Samantha Deeb, Susan Grundlingh, Pauline Gutter, Drini Jacob, Marlise Keith, Nkululeko Khumalo, Jeanne Kotze Louw, Nathani Luneburg, Moira Macmurray, Amelia Malatji, Estelle Marais, Elizabeth Miller-Vermeulen, Ilona Petzer, Annette Pretorius, Johanna Prinsloo, Fiona Rowett, Edit Schmidt, Erica Schoeman, Sandy Schoeman, Avi Sooful, Lynette ten Krooden, Elsa van der Klashorst, Mimi van der Merwe and Minette van Rooyen.
The exhibition, which is made possible by a grant from the South African National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, opens at the NAGN, on Friday, 9 August at 18h00.
It will be opened by Pieter van Heerden, Director of the Association of Arts Pretoria.
