Kaaronda to form union

PLANS by fired National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW) secretary-general Evilastus Kaaronda (photo) to form a new umbrella body are at an advanced stage with people close to him confirming that he had been consulting widely.
Although a cartel of leaders in NUNW managed to get rid of Kaaronda last year, it seems their bid to silence him have failed to materialise as their former employee now plots to take them on.

The Namibian understands that the outspoken union leader has lined up meetings with various unionists and interested parties with the view of looking at the viability of forming a trade union and to map out the way forward.

According to sources, Kaaronda has also told confidantes that he was available if they wanted to form a new umbrella union.

Asked on the speculation on his intentions to form a new union, Kaaronda declined to tell The Namibian his next move. He, however, reiterated his belief that the idea of forming a new union is “charming and juicy”.

“I am willing to stand by them provided that the workers stand up and rise to the occasion. They need to take ownership of the labour movement,” he said. “They need to change the status quo.”

The Namibian has learnt that Kaaronda has been “bombarded with countless” requests to form an independent union while there are others who have volunteered to form a union which he should lead.

It is understood that the former union leader is weighing out his options on the type of union to form depending on the outcome of his consultations. He could either go for an umbrella body like the NUNW or form a union and later establish an umbrella organisation.

Sources close to the unionist yesterday confirmed that Kaaronda was concerned that some workers are “too quiet and idle” despite “evidence” that some of their union leaders are not having their interests at heart.

“What good does it do to stand by people who do not want to stand up for themselves,” he said.

Namibia’s union movement is dominated by bargaining bodies that are close to the ruling party and commentators, including Kaaronda, have openly questioned the relationship between the union leaders and the government.

Kaaronda was last month paid N$750 000 by the NUNW after they unceremoniously dismissed him 11 months ago.

He has dominated news headlines during his tenure at NUNW. Among them was when he took the lead calling the union leadership to act against corruption, including the case involved the missing N$650 million from GIPF that was loaned out by the pension fund but was never recovered.

Kaaronda succeeded Peter Naholo as NUNW secretary general. Naholo and Risto Kapenda were controversially ousted and replaced by Kaaronda and now deputy labour minister Alphaus Muheua.

During his tenure as union leader, Kaaronda who has been described as the “darling of grassroots union members”, was almost arrested for supporting demonstrating taxi drivers and appeared in court for supporting teachers who were on strike last year.

Kaaronda reportedly also allegedly received a death threat from a Cabinet minister who reportedly told to him “you must drop this GIPF thing unless you have a death wish”.

  • I hope every Namibian will look beyond ethnic and political affiliation when it comes to what this man stands for. The GIPF saga or the lost millions that got Kaaronda in hot water belonged to every civil servant! Our leaders have enriched themselves shamelessly and those in NUNW are paving their way to the top by being silent about issues that affect workers to secure that one day their masters will let them share the messy cream cake! - Vezemburuka

  • Kaaronda must go ahead with the idea of forming a new union. People wants to migrate from NAPWU which is always bargaining for themselves as most top officials they are management cadres in government. They do not look at the interest of the rank and files. Now the signed an agreement with government which increased the gap between poor and rich contrary to Vision 2030. ViVa Kaaronda we need people like you to represent us. - Grace
  • Dear Kaaronda, your dreams of a corruption-free society in Namibia are much overdue. Our society must be rid off the existing chain of the greedy few; where the employees (bosses) and government dictate the agenda in the unions. You are likely an unselfish and valuable asset for a Namibian dream and and therefore have our unequivocal support for justice in our land. - Longeni

  • I think it's normal in the democratically state like ours. Namibai is a free country with free nation and their right is well protected by the constitution let them enjoy their freedom but they should follow the right procedure and obey the law of the state. - Jeffrey
  • Its good for the powerless workers. But Namibian workers are to be blamed. They elect union leaders and start treating them like 'gods'. Its time for the workers to start owning the unions, to be in charge of the unions, not to give unions to leaders to treat them as they wish, and then run to the media and complain. The power is with the workers, if union leaders are not delivering, out vote them and put other leaders who are prepared to be servants of the workers, not bosses of the workers. Today in Namibia we see union leaders who have turned unions into 'universities', because once you become a union leader the door to good life is opened, as if they have graduated from a university. Some union leaders have became powerful than the unions they head. Its time for union members to reshape their thinking and be in charge of their unions. - Comio Sasele
  • Goodluck cde, if we had leaders lyk u teachers wouldnt be punished for having gone 2strike that brought joy to all civil servants incl principals... God bless - Fillemon
  • Why forming a new union is this money making business i don't support this idea so many independent unions but no improvement - A.G

  • That's a good idea Mr Kaaronda, keep it up please, I'm also supporting your idea so that you may come and rescue us in this so called regarding. - Kristophina
  • All the best brother, you have my vote. - Sackey Shiyandja
  • Well, the idea is brilliant but Mr. Kaaronda should know full well by now that the majority of workers are such morons who would't dare or risk to be associated with such a movement! I think if the idea is to be born now that it has been conceived, is for that leadership to do some serious ground work. 1) Run educational campaigns since after over 20yrs of independence most workers have't got the slightest clue what unions stands for. 2) Every aspiring person who want to be in the leadership should be put under a micro-scope for screening of intent in order to weed out those opportunistic people who are willing to rise to the top at whatever cost. 3) The union should have strong and unbiased principles. It is my sincere hope that if the new union see the light of day, it will be a union formed in good faith to serve and give a voice to the workers who had been led down time and time again! Mr Kaaronda good luck with whatever you set your eyes on, Golda - Golda
  • i was afraid they silenced him for good. Beware of opportunists my brother even in your new union,,,, - mabi,

Form your union and rescue us please. - toivo hausiku
  • i really do agree with the forming of a new umbrella body and this body should be an independent body that can even challenge the cabinet but not dance the music played by them(cabinet).ovandu ovakuenandje kaveuruo tjina muatje uamama. okuhepa okurira omurumendu uakatjotjiri ami kourike uandje mbe kuhukurira ekori koupatje uoje! - jacqueline uapngisa kajovi @0813030801
