THE Swapo Politburo yesterday announced that the President of Senegal, Macky Sall, will visit Namibia during the Heroes Day commemorations.
Swapo Secretary- General Nangolo Mbumba said Sall who is coming on an official visit will be President Hifikepunye Pohamba’s guest. When asked if the party’s announcement of the Senegalese leader’s visit will not heighten the arguments of those who believe that the government and Swapo are one and the same, Mbumba said what they did was not something extraordinary.
“We [Swapo] are only announcing the sequence of events that will take place on Heroes Day (26 August) and the visit by the Senegalese president, is news that should be shared with the rest of the country. We are just stating the obvious. If there are those who question why we [Swapo] are announcing the visit, next time we will simply avoid mentioning it,” he said.
He said the meeting of the politburo, which took place on Monday, also included an update on the preparations of the commemoration of the Heroes Day.
Mbumba said the Heroes Day commemoration will be preceded by a workshop (‘Ohungi’) on 25 August 2013 where President Pohamba, former President Sam Nujoma, Andimba Toivo Ya Toivo, Mburumba Kerina and others will share their experiences on the founding of Swapo and the struggle for national liberation. Mbumba said the ‘Ohungi’ will take place at Outapi Regional Council office.
“This is a public lecture and everybody, especially the youth are invited and encouraged to attend,” he said. Mbumba also said the amended constitution of Swapo will be launched on 26 August at Omuguluwombashe.
“On the same occasion the statue of the Founding President, Sam Nujoma, will be unveiled,” said Mbumba. “The public is invited and encouraged to attend these events,” he added.
