Suspect injured in police shoot

CAUGHT IN THE ACT... A robbery suspect was caught red- handed at a house in Cimbebasia yesterday. In an attempt to flee, he allegedly hit one of the police officers with an iron bar to which the police’s reaction resulted in a gun wound on his knee.

THE Windhoek City Police yesterday morning acted in self- defence and shot a robbery suspect in the knee after he struck a policeman with an iron bar in Cimbebasia.

The suspect, who had to be rushed to hospital for treatment, was resisting arrest after a vigilant resident had alerted the police of unusual movements in his neighbour’s house.

City Police public relations officer, Superintendent Helena Mootseng, said the suspect had broken into Morton van Kradenburg’s house around 08h00 when the owner was at work. Mootseng said the suspect gained entry into the house by bending one of the burglar bars on the window using an iron bar.

When the police rushed to the scene, they found the suspect stashing a laptop and other items in a bag.

Mootseng added that it was at that time when the suspect tried to flee after striking one of the police officers with the iron bar. In order to restrain him, Mootseng said the police had to shoot him in the knee.

The assaulted officer suffered minor injuries. Van Kradenburg said he was shocked to receive a call from the police telling him that his house had been burgled into. “I thank my neighbour for what he did. I advise people to get to know their neighbours for a time such as this.”

Thanks to the city police. After hardwork of the police when it comes to justice(court) the robber gets suspended sentence and then he is again a danger for the society. So justice severe punishment for offenders. - Leonardo
