Walvis pupil murdered

JOHANNA Nantopo (16), a Grade nine learner at De Duine Secondary School in Walvis Bay, was on her way to school yesterday morning when she was attacked by a knife-wielding man, stabbed several times in the neck and chest and died on the spot.

The suspected murderer however got his lot when he fled from the scene and ran across the busy B2 highway between Swakopmund and the harbour town but was hit by a truck in the process. He is also dead. He was identified as 26-year-old Jonas Mukonda.

Acting Regional Crime Investigation Coordinator of the Erongo Police, Inspector Erastus Iikuyu said that the motive for the murder was unclear but added that it did not seem as if the two had any relationship.

“Whether he was waiting for her, and what his motive was is unknown,” said Iikuyu.

The incident happened at around 07h30 about 200 metres away from the ‘Welcome to Walvis Bay’ sign.

Extreme east winds limited visibility because of the sand and dust, and it is suspected that the murderer used the opportunity to conceal his act. That was until he was killed on the road, resulting in attention being drawn to the body of the girl lying on the Tamariskia side of the road.
