WINDHOEK – The Windhoek Gymnasium (WHK Gym) Netball Club retained their lead on the Bank Windhoek Schools’ Netball Super League after beating the Walvis Bay Private High School (WBPHS) in Walvis Bay over the weekend.
The inaugural Bank Windhoek Schools Netball Super League commenced on 7 July and will conclude during the first week of August this year.
The league was initiated with the aim of providing schools with the opportunity to improve the standard of netball. The league is also endorsed by the Namibia Schools Sport Union (NSSU) and as a result, the top eight teams of the NSSU Netball league will automatically qualify for the National Super League.
Round Six of the league was played in four towns - namely, Windhoek, Walvis Bay, Otjiwarongo and Stampriet – over the past week.
The log leaders defeated their opponents by 44 points to 18 to strongly mark their number one spot with 18 points, after winning all their nine games of play thus far.
WHK Gym are now four points ahead of Tsumeb Gymnasium in second position.
The Tsumeb team, however, have an advantage of one game in hand, but lost one match in an earlier encounter.
The two outstanding matches will be played next week between WBPHS and Tsumeb Gym, as well as Windhoek Afrikaans Private (WAP) school from Windhoek against Elnatan from Stampriet.
The top four teams will go through to the play-offs for the A-division, while the next four will be playing in the B-division final.
The semi-finals and finals will be played in Windhoek on 09 and 10 August.
Dr Lemmer High School from Rehoboth is at the bottom of the log with zero points after nine games played.
The league’s winning schools will win netball equipment for their respective schools, sponsored by Bank Windhoek. -Nampa

IN an initiative to give netball more publicity, a monthly half-hour magazine programme will be broadcast on SuperSport 4 and will cover all aspects of the most popular women’s sport in South Africa. The series will focus on development programmes and primary school netball, as well as the national team. “This is going to do so much for netball,” said Netball SA (NSA) vice president Blanche de la Guerre.
“It will put netball on the map and people will be able to see what the sport is all about. “Many people know very little about netball and are unaware of what we do.”
There are 47 netball regions in South Africa, and most women will have played it at some stage in their lives.
“People will also be able to see what a vibrant and exciting game it is. Those who dismiss it as a game for schoolgirls will see how much skill and athletic ability is needed at the top level.
“Netball will be in the face of the viewers, and that will raise our profile.”
The launch programme will be broadcast tomorrow at 18.30.
The broadcasters have also agreed to televise all international matches involving the national team at home, and will endeavour to cover international matches where possible. -Nampa-Sapa
