Bidvest seeks telecommunications licence
BIDVEST Namibia Information Technology, has applied for a Comprehensive Telecommunications Service Licence, which would among other things, allow the company to enter the mobile phone market.
“Bidvest Namibia Information Technology has its medium to long-term strategy to become a fully fledged ASP/ISP and to expand our WAN from current 15 major locations to cover the entire Namibia,” said general manager Pierre Joubert in an application lodged with Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN).
The company currently provides hosted application services from two data centres. Joubert said in the application that these services require its clients to have connectivity from their premises to Bidvest. Bidvest has applied for radio frequencies; 2.4 Hhz to 2.5GHz, 5.725Ghz to 5.875GhZ and 24.000Ghz to 24.250Ghz.
“In town wireless point to point network for last mile connectivity to our data centres or to local points of presence,” Joubert said on the services intended for provision. Bidvest has indicated Wi-Fi as its medium transmission.
Stanley Shanapinda, the CEO of CRAN said in an interview that the licence applied for by Bidvest is a service neural, which means the company can in future venture into mobile and other voice services if it so wishes.
“It depends on what their plans are,” he said adding that such a licence would be the same as the ones held by MTC Namibia and Leo.
The public may submit comments in respect of the notices within 14 days from 19 July.
In May, CRAN awarded 28 new spectrum-use licence certificates to local service providers.
The new licences replace the broadcast licences previously granted by its predecessor, the Namibian Communications Commission.
The new licences move away from technology-specific authorisation, allowing holders service- and technology-neutral broadcasting permission. Companies awarded universal service licences in May include Telecom Namibia, Capricorn Radio, Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC), One Africa Television, Leo and Radio Ecclesia.
In the Annual Report ended 31 December 2012, Bidvest said the commercial division will persist to strategise, effectively diversify and increase efforts within the development strategies currently in place.
“All businesses are adequately funded and investment opportunities are pursued as and when they arise,” Bidvest said.
Bidvest is a services, trading and distribution company listed on the Namibian Stock Exchange. It employs 2 500 people. Bidvest is part of Bidvest South Africa.
Schoemans Technologies has also has submitted an application for a Comprehensive Telecommunications Service licence and a Spectrum Use Licence.
