Sport to employ 228 promoters
KAYENGONA – The Ministry of Sports will employ 228 sports development promoters countrywide during the 2013/2014 financial year. This was revealed by the Deputy Sport Minister Juliet Kavetuna on Wednesday during a meeting held with a number of youths at the Kayengona tribal office, situated some 10 kilometres east of Rundu.
She said this in response to questions from sports activists in the Kavango Region, who wanted to know why their region does not have volunteer sports officers in its constituencies to promote youth sports activities.
One of the sports activists from the region, Isa Saidi said the ministry’s programme on sports activities in constituencies in Kavango is virtually “non-existent” as the region currently only has one regional sports officer, who cannot serve the entire region adequately because it is vast.
Kavetuna indicated that the sports development officers will be responsible for promoting sports in schools across the region, as well as in villages. The ministry will also employ 15 sports’ development co-ordinators, who will supervise sports activities across the country. The Deputy Minister noted that as sport is part of the education system, it is hoped that the sports’ development promoters will address the problem of teachers being overloaded with other responsibilities, especially sports activities.
Kavetuna also spoke about the lack of funds, saying it limits the ministry from giving all of Namibia’s 52 sports codes priority.
She, however, stressed that the ministry will have a strategic plan in place, which will amongst other things focus on assisting sports codes which are nationally-recognised.
She cited as an example Kenya, which has a population of nearly 40 million, but yet only focuses on four sports codes.
The Deputy Minister then went on to comment on Namibia’s high unemployment rate, saying it should not be solely Government’s responsibility. She then encouraged young people to meet Government halfway by identifying potential business opportunities in the market. “Employment-creation is the right of every Namibian. If you wait for Government to give you jobs, you will never realise your dreams because not everybody will be employed by Government,” Kavetuna stressed. -Nampa
