THE Namibia Swimming Union (NASU) on Monday received N$100 000 from Bank Windhoek towards the development of the sport and grooming athletes to compete at national and international levels.
The funds will also be used to host the NASU summer season Long Course (50m) events, which will start in October until April next year.
The Long Course season includes 10 galas and a five day Bank Windhoek Namibia National Long Course Swimming Championship.
“We are grateful for the sponsorship and we look forward to working with Bank Windhoek to promote swimming as a sport in Namibia,” said NASU General Secretary Angelika Diekmann. “Unfortunately, due to the absence of the right standard sized swimming pools in most towns, the Long Course competitions can only take place in Tsumeb and Windhoek. However, swimming is not an expensive sport and is therefore accessible to a large segment of our society. We would welcome anyone who is interested to take up swimming as a sport,” she added.
“Swimming is one of the few Namibian sport codes that continue to perform well on regional and international platforms. We believe that this sponsorship will assist the union to promote and grow the sport and hopefully one day, groom swimmers that will bring an Olympic medal back home,” said Bank Windhoek’s communication practitioner Elzita Beukes.
NASU, which has been operating since the 1950’s, is affiliated with the Namibian Sport Commission and the Namibian National Olympic Committee, and internationally with the International Swimming Federation (Fina) and the African Swimming Federation (Cana).
