New records at Nasu Gala 3

TEN new Namibian age-group and three new Open records were set at the Namibia Swimming Union Short Course Gala 3 held at Namib Swim Academy in Windhoek over the weekend.
Eight year-old Mikah Burger posted a new boys 8-and-under 50m backstroke record with a time of 45,19 seconds.

Heleni Stergiadis (10) set three new records – in the girls 12-and-under 400m individual medley (6:00.22), girls 10-and-under 100m individual medley (1:23.96) and in the 9-10 girls 50m butterfly (37,07) event.

The 11-12 boys 100m individual medley contest saw 12 year-old Ronan Wantenaar set a new record of 1:16,70.

Kiara Schatz (14), set a record in 13-14 girls 200m freestyle with 2:13.83, while Zanre Oberholzer (14) shaved off over two seconds of her former 200m backstroke record to post 2:16.75.

Oberholzer broke both the girls 13-14 and the Open record for this event.

In addition, four other records were broken in 800m freestyle category.

Corne Le Roux (11) broke the record for boys 12-and-under, as Jorn Diekmann (16) established a new record for boys 15-16 when he swam 9:05,11.

Molina Smalley (15) broke the girls 15-16 and the Open record with a time of 9:32,85. Daniela Lindemeier (21) now holds the Open record for the 200m butterfly event with her time of 2:27.25.

In less than a week, Oberholzer and Lindemeier will compete at the FINA World Championships in Barcelona while five other Namibian swimmers have qualified to represent the country in the Junior World Championships in Dubai next month. They are Lushano Lamprecht (15), Gabriella Liebenberg (15), Oberholzer, Antonia Roth (15) and Smalley.

The rest of the Namibian swimmers are currently preparing for the upcoming Short Course National Championships to be held in Windhoek on the 16-18 of August.
