THE president of the Namibia Transport and Taxi Union (NTTU), Werner Januarie, has announced that members of his union will go on a national strike today. He said the strike will be indefinite until they get a positive response from the government over their demands. “Even if it takes a month the strike will go on.”

Januarie said taxi drivers want to be consulted when regulations on public transport are taken. He added that NTTU has around 800 taxi drivers as members at present.

The strike is not supported by the Namibia Bus and Taxi Association (NABTA) who represents taxi owners.

NABTA president Vespa Muunda told The Namibian that his association will not take part in the strike.

“NABTA was not consulted about the strike. We know nothing of it,” Muunda said.

NTTU broke away from NABTA a few years ago.
