Policeman arrested for robbery charges
A SUSPENDED police constable from Oshakati, Abnel Matheus, was rearrested on Wednesday and is accused of having been involved in an armed robbery incident at Oshiko village near Ongwediva.
According to the Oshana Police Liaison Officer, Sergeant Thomas Aiyambo, Matheus was suspended in February this year after he had been involved in different crimes of housebreaking, armed robbery and kidnapping since January this year.
Aiyambo said Matheus is believed to have been involved in three armed robbery and kidnapping cases in Oshakati, Ongwediva and Oshikango.
Additionally, he was implicated in the kidnapping of a Chinese national of Oshikango in May and also in a theft case of 40 police uniforms found at Adolfi near Ondangwa at the end of May this year.
He was temporarily released on bail of N$5 000.
Last weekend, it is alleged that Matheus led a group of five armed robbers at Oshiko village near Ongwediva and was arrested with two other suspects.
Charges of housebreaking and armed robbery were laid and the three appeared in the Oshakati Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. Aiyambo said although Matheus was on suspension and was ordered to report every Friday to the Oshakati Police Station, he continued to be implicated in other crimes.
