Call for utilities to review tariffs
A MEMBER of the Swapo Party representing the Oshana Region in the National Council has appealed to NamWater and NamPower to seriously reconsider their bulk water and electricity tariffs.
Aram Martin, the regional councillor for the Oshakati West Constituency, further appealed to all local authorities and regional councils to urgently come up with uniform water and electricity tariffs countrywide.
He was speaking during debate on the Value-Added Tax Amendment Bill yesterday.
“Why are the water and electricity tariffs not the same in all towns, municipalities, villages and settlements across the country? One will find that each municipality is charging the ratepayers differently,” Martin said.
He requested Government to set up a task force to look into the ever-increasing tariffs of water and electricity.
At present, water tariffs are approved by the NamWater management, while electricity tariffs are set by each municipality on the recommendation of the Electricity Control Board. – Nampa
