Sam Nujoma marathon to be held next month
THE inaugural Dr Sam Nujoma Windhoek Marathon will start at the Windhoek Independence Stadium on May 14.
Commissioner Amos Shiyuka made the announcement at the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) on Tuesday.
“The event is expected to attract nearly 1 000 athletes, coaches, sport administrators and volunteers from different parts of the country,” Shiyuka said.
“It is indeed very encouraging to see the overwhelming response we received from corporate organisations for coming on board within a short period,” he added. The main sponsor of the marathon will be MTC who gave an amount of N$130 000 towards the hosting of the event. MTC chief human capital and corporate affairs general manager, Tim Ekandjo said the marathon was a fitting tribute to Sam Nujoma’s visionary leadership.
“We are giving N$115 000 in cash and N$15 000 in products towards the marathon, we are doing this with the hope that in the next years the marathon will grow to the same level where the other international marathons are,” Ekandjo said. In the run up to the marathon the organisers will host a fundraising dinner at the Safari Hotel on April 27.
“An auction of items courtesy of the Founding Father as well as well-known former Namibian international athletes will be put up for bids,” Shiyuka said.
“We wish to call upon corporate Namibia to aid the commission by purchasing a table for 10 guests which will be going to the amount of N$3 000,” he added.
“The proceeds will go towards the contributions to the first ever Dr. Sam Nujoma Windhoek Marathon.”
The marathon is scheduled to start at the Windhoek Independence Stadium at 06h30 and will be run over 5km, 10km and 42km distances.
“Registration for all entries in different categories starts on Tuesday April 26 and the forms are available at the offices of the NSC and at Athletics Namibia,” Shiyuka said.
“N$10 for the 5km fun run, N$20 for the 10km run and N$30 for the 42km,” he added.– namibiasport.com.na
