Goals galore in women’s football
By: CORRY IHUHUATHE Khomas Women’s Football League started with a bang last weekend with 34 goals finding the back of the net in three encounters played in Windhoek and one at Rehoboth.
The biggest score line was achieved by defending champions Okahandja Beauties who beat rookies Shifidi Beauties 17-0.
Kleintjie Fredericks did the damage for Beauties by scoring six goals, placing her at the top of the charts.
Shifidi Beauties only joined the eight-league team this season and still have a long away to go to establish themselves among the more seasoned sides.
The Jacqui Shipanga Soccer Academy, which largely consists of under-15 girls, could not withstand the might of Angels United, who won 7-0 in the end.
Both teams are new to the league.
In another match in Windhoek, Poly Babes started their league on a winning note with a fantastic 7-0 drubbing of old foes Unam Bokkies.
The two teams have been in the league for a while now and with the Unam students still rusty from a long break, the Polytechnic girls wasted little time in posting the victory that will keep them motivated for future matches.
The only match outside Windhoek saw Rehoboth Queens hosting Windhoek College of Education (WCE). Rehoboth won 3-0.
PLAYERS EXPELLED
Yesterday, national women’s football co-ordinator and NFA executive member Jacky Gertze confirmed that three players were expelled from Okahandja Beauties last season due to poor disciplinary records.
She said national women’s team members Bonita Eixas, Bianca Fredericks and Inge Katemo were all shown the door after repeated warnings because of their wayward behaviour.
Gertze said Katemo might be considered to come back to the team, but there is no official position from the team yet. “We gave them warning letters and spoke to them to change their behaviour, but it got out of hand and they were subsequently expelled. That was a warning to players who misbehave and who think that they are bigger than the game,” she warned.
At the moment, Khomas, Oshana, Omusati, Kavango, Kunene and Karas have active women’s football leagues. corry@namibian.com.na
