Mighty Pirates sink minnows Touch & Go

By: * CORRY IHUHUA

TOP premiership contenders Orlando Pirates sunk the hapless Touch & Go 8-0 at the Independence Stadium on Saturday, while Black Africa recorded two straight wins at the weekend.

African Stars pulled a 1-1 draw against Chief Santos in the capital

on Saturday, while Tigers surprised Blue Waters with a 3-0 victory

at the Kuisebmond Stadium on the same day, with a stunning

hat-trick from Tigers striker Letu Shatimwene.

Ramblers were the better side against Eleven Arrows as they

walked away with a 1-0 win, also at the Kuisebmond Stadium, while

on the previous night, Civics made sure to keep their title hopes

on track with a 3-1 victory at the SKW Stadium.

Yesterday, Touch & Go recorded their first win in the league

this season as they downed fellow newcomers SKW 2-1 at the SKW

Stadium, as Black Africa were held to a 1-1 draw by Chief Santos at

the Independence Stadium.

Blue Waters recovered from their loss against Tigers on Saturday

to record a 2-0 win over Ramblers in one of the earlier matches of

the day.

The prolific Orlando Pirates striker, Wilfred Coetzee scored a

hat-trick in their win against Touch & Go, while teammates

Klaas Blom and Roney Hoeseb hit the net twice each.

Pirates captain Riaan Cloete scored once, but it was not the day

for striker Ettiene Beukes who did not make use of the opportunity

to add to his tally.

Touch & Go will still be on the bottom of the log, despite

their win over SKW yesterday.

The Otavi side has in total conceded 15 goals in their three

matches.

In their match on Saturday, forward Tjono Jagger was on target

for Black Africa in their 1-0 win over Oshakati City.

In the other match, Steve Tjeenao, who briefly played for BA

during the pre-season, opened the scoring for his side in the first

ten minutes, before Andrew Tjahikika equalised just before the

break for Stars.

In that match, BA's Sedekias Haukambe was sent off for using

foul language.

Santos has only two points from their three matches now, while

African Stars has three points after three consecutive draws.

Stars could have won the match if it was not for the

wastefulness in front of goal.

Foul play from both sides also interrupted play on several

occasions.

Meanwhile, Shatimwene at Walvis Bay proved to be a great asset

for Tigers which he threatened to leave last season as he blasted

three goals past the Blue Waters goal.

Blue Waters coach Shepherd Murape said his side, which won

back-to-back league titles a season ago, was disappointing on

Saturday.

"We lost the game through defensive errors and we simply did not

play well overall, he told The Namibian Sport yesterday.

Blue Waters will be among the front-runners for the league title

which was won by Civivcs last season.

He added that the match against Ramblers was much better and he

was hoping to improve on several aspects before the next match.
