President names new Ministers
By: CHRISTOF MALETSKYPRESIDENT Sam Nujoma yesterday appointed Marco Hausiku as his new Foreign Affairs Minister.
In a move widely viewed as aimed at garnering more votes for his
preferred candidate in the Swapo presidential race, Nujoma promoted
a female deputy minister and also named two women as deputies.
Nujoma, who appeared to be in a sombre mood when he made the
announcement, presented former Labour Minister Hausiku as his
successor to Hidipo Hamutenya who was sacked on Monday night.
Nujoma has promoted deputy Women Affairs Minister Marlene Mungunda
to succeed Hausiku at the Ministry of Labour.
Mungunda's position at Women Affairs will be filled by "the
Himba lady", MP Angelika Muharukua.
Swapo party Youth League activist, Lempy Lucas, replaces Dr Kaire
Mbuende as deputy Minister at Foreign Affairs.
Nujoma said he was confident that the new appointees would
deliver in their new posts.
Some political observers said Nujoma's appointments were aimed
at mobilising votes for Hifikepunye Pohamba from among the youth
and women at the Swapo extraordinary congress which takes place
today and tomorrow.
