In the same week that a humble, God-fearing, brave and beloved statesman was laid to rest in a ceremony that showed great appreciation of multitudes of Namibians, preliminary pictures of the new Independence Museum were published.
This monstrosity reflects none of the Namibian heroism, but echoes victories won elsewhere, dramatically blown-up ego's of statesmen in other continents, ideologies of non-human scale humanism, governance on a scale superior to that of the ordinary citizen and therefore a negation of the people of Namibia. The lie that Leaders are to be spelled in capital letters, don't eat and go to the toilet as others do, are somehow physical giants, never lie or cheat and are Beneficiaries of the people. Its style: completely non-African with a little African motive plastered on it to make it look less fake. No, we have our artists, we have our culture and our style. This is not it. It clashes with the national spirit as much as any colonial thing it replaces. And thinking of what it will cost, makes our poor and dying people lose even more hope.
Glory then, at the expense of those who will stand at its awesome base and not feel so much proud of their independence as a little intimidated about their future. Redesign.
