The independence was achieved 19 years ago. That was a good thing to have in the history books. But was that means people who are in power had to take up the offices and start sleeping on duty. In our country we have a number of challenges that suppose to be tackled and some could have been reduced from the high risk level to the better position. The death toll in Namibian roads have increased and if the record have to be taken of the people who lost their lives in roads could be even more than the people lost their lives during the liberation struggle. Many people will take an easy way out and say there are lot of reckless drivers in the road, drunken drivers, un-roadworthy vehicles just to mention a few. But if we look on the other side of the story, are our roads safe? We have a number of road contractors especially in the north and their expertise is really questionable. They do not have a track record in the road construction, no qualified engineers , no Quality Controllers. That makes one wonders what standards are in place and if the Government who is the client, does he really pay for the job well done or just sign the papers. If you are to take a gravel road from Oshakati to Endola, you'll find one newly constructed deadly bridge. If you to take the gravel road from Omafo to Okalongo, you will have to be careful of the time bomb bridges. People are losing lives in the roads but still tenders are awarded to unknown black empowerment companies just to make individuals rich and risk the lives of the peace loving nation.
