The other day my friend was telling me that one of the recruiters ask her to provide her with a link to one of her social networking sites. And she said she does not use any of the avenues of social media.Guess what the recruiter's answer was?

I said to my friend ,well girl we living in an era were technology has become an integral part of our life's you either part of the technological revolution or be left behind.Good thing is that she actually chose to be part of the " new thing"were you MXit and Linkedin.

How effective are the online advertising campaigns in Namibia -Windhoek, is there an online community in Windhoek that I can use to network .

The unfortunate side-effect of this is of course that all those that doe *not* have frequent and inexpensive access to the Internet are "left behind" like this. Office work without basic IT knowledge and some sort of online community participation? Forget it...

The plethora of social networking sites (just do a basic search on that term on Google and you get millions more of matches than you'd get say for "AIDS" or "Namibia") however also has certain drawbacks: which one of the many should you choose to participate? Should you participate in more than one such site? What type of impression do you make on others by participating on one site while ignoring another (kind of like a "suit an tie" to "sneakers and jeans" type of situation), and how much do you choose to reveal of yourself there?

I mean - after all, employers aren't dumb either. They most likely inquire about you long before you even get an invite to their office, and while there may be labour laws that deny them the right to ask questions that would be too personal, having a long row of revealing photos on your Facebook or Myspace page may tell much more about you than you probably would like your prospective employer to know without you even having the chance to put the things you post there into some sort of perspective...

If you think that you can do "online advertising" the way you're used to with the classical media (print, radio, TV), you're probably growing a really long beard before anything notable ever happens. At the same time, make sure you really are heading for your target market - if you sell koeksisters on the street, or have a clientele that normally doesn't make much use of the Internet, it's highly likely that you'd simply waste your cash with spiffy online-ads.

The same applies when you sell goods or services that require a large amount of explaining - you can't go about selling consulting services the way you'd sell beer or books for example: people just won't commit themselves to the idea of putting "three hours personal coaching" into some virtual shopping cart...

And a Windhoek based online community - hang on, what exactly are we doing here on *this* site then? icon_cool.gif

If you're looking for free advertising, www.namibiaanswers.com is offering free advertising until 31st December 2009. You are not obligated to advertise with them after the promotion. They will also be at the MTC Expo.

Mr. Gerard Jensen,

I read your post and your words on social media and It's effectiveness. Look man you got it totally wrong or may be what ever you are saying is not on practical basis. Simply because you did not manage to exercise the power of social media doesn't proves it's ineffectiveness.

Let me take this opportunity to give you a clear intro on social media, so that at the end of this post you start exercising power of social media in what ever business you have and in what ever city, country or state you belong to.

What is Social media?

Social media means social sharing. It's not something limited to advertising, getting business or sales. It's even more than that. Just think I am using this forum to spend my 10 minutes answering your post without even knowing you. Think of Facebook, If you cannot prop your girlfriend you can prop online. If you are in another country, you can come on chat with your friends. Think if a platform where you just stay in touch with all your friends at a single place. See where they are, what they are doing and even much more.

1. As you said that If you don't have IT knowledge, Is of know use.

Look man, when I first started using Facebook, I did not knew what to do and I felt the very same way but as soon as I fond my friends using Facebook, I started spending more time on Facebook and within just a week I knew every maths involve in Facebook. Look I started using Facebook at just an age of 12 years, I am not an IT guy.

Do you know that the future of country wars will be decided online.

Forget it you are not an IT guy.

2. The plethora of social networking sites?

Man what do you want to convey here, even a single networking site like Facebook, can give you all your friend list.
How about twitter? For business and professional world not for friendship but for networking.

Both Twitter and Facebook are enough for everyone.

3. If you think that you can do "online advertising" the way you're used to with the classical media (print, radio, TV), you're probably growing a really long beard before anything notable ever happens.

Really man, Using social media in my advertising was never so irreparable than before. Every business needs a web address and clients needs a web address for customer support and enquiery.

If you ever find time just visit any school and check their business studies book or ask any business studies teacher about ebusiness and it's importance and effectiveness.

Did you know, you pay around $1000/month for a board advertisement on a street or foot path but its effictevenress is limited to branding but when it comes to social media advertising, you target your ads keyword based, and this brings needy customer ready with their credit cards to pop out money in your account.

An example could be my blog, showing targeted ads to visitors on web hosting reviews, really concern about reading reviews and buying web hosting.

I think this will prove an eye opener to you.

Thanks!
