Speeding car crashes, bursts into flames

TANJA BAUSE

A BMW with Botswana registration plates and an Audi collided on the corner of Beethoven and Simpson streets in Windhoek West yesterday evening.

According to a witness, the BMW came speeding down Simpson Street and had already nearly crashed at a corner further up the road.

The driver then allegedly ignored a yield sign and hit the Audi at high speed, pushing it onto the pavement and through a pre-cast wall.

The BMW burst into flames on impact and a short while later the petrol tank exploded, causing the car to burn out completely.

Both drivers and a passenger in the BMW miraculously escaped unharmed.

Residents said it was the second serious accident at the crossing this year.

One resident said people generally speed down Simpson Street and ignore the yield sign on a blind corner, and it's a wonder that more accidents don't happen there.

He said the telephone pole in front of his house in Simpson Street had already been flattened three times.

Residents suggested that the municipality should install speed bumps to force drivers to slow down.
