Thursday, September 4, 2008 - Web posted at 8:38:03 AM GMT FMD under close surveillance RUNDU - A second round of surveillance of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in eastern Kavango kicked off on Tuesday. |
|
The three-day inspection will cover about 21 villages in the Mukwe Constituency. Veterinarians travelled to the villages of Shadjunyu, Dikongo, Shayirungu, Muthinduko, Ruwongo, Mukwe and Diyova on Tuesday. The FMD outbreak was detected on July 28 at Kamutjonga village in the Mukwe Constituency, some 220 km east of Rundu. The first clinical cases of FMD were detected at four kraals, and 15 cattle were identified. The outbreak of FMD is suspected to have been transmitted by buffalo in the nearby Mahango Game Park. Buffalo are known carriers of the virus that causes FMD. In an interview last week, Rundu State Veterinarian Dr Thompson Shuro told Nampa that the surveillance exercise was necessary, as it would enable them to assess if the infection had spread further. Shuro said that over 18 000 cattle had been re-vaccinated against the FMD outbreak. He described the figure as overwhelming, saying more cattle had been brought for re-vaccination than anticipated. Two roadblocks have been set up at Kamutjonga village. Nampa |
