Wear pink, be aware

TANJA BAUSE

OCTOBER is Breast Cancer Awareness month and the Cancer Association of Namibia has organised some activities to create awareness and raise funds.

This Friday, people are encouraged to wear pink to show their support to breast cancer sufferers and survivors.

On Saturday, the Medi-Clinic hospitals in Windhoek, Swakopmund and Otjiwarongo will host their annual breast cancer walk over five or ten kilometres.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in developing countries but it is also the most studied and best treated form of cancer.

Most breast cancer cases are discovered by the woman herself through self-examination.

A woman should do regular selfexaminations and once an abnormality is discovered or suspected, different techniques are used to further examine and make a diagnosis.

Should an abnormality be discovered there is no need for panic, as most breast cysts are benign and can be treated.

Early detection is of utmost importance and a woman should consult a doctor if she notices any change in her breasts or a swelling of the lymph nodes in her armpits.

Women needing more information can contact the Cancer Association of Namibia at (061) 23 7740.
