According to a press statement, market research was done on the potential of this new regional route and continuous requests and enquiries indicated the demand both locally and internationally to have access to Walvis Bay.

"Access to the international markets and economical opportunities that Walvis Bay as a harbour and the Erongo Region in the mining sector offer has now become accessible to all thanks to the country's flagship carrier, Air Namibia," the statement read.

Passengers will now be able to fly directly from Cape Town to Walvis Bay, while Johannesburg passengers will fly via Windhoek to Walvis Bay.

Air Namibia promises that its Boeing B737-500, with a capacity of 108 passengers will make "booking a flight on this route a breeze".

The new route also will provide better connection flights from Walvis Bay to Europe via Windhoek, according to the statement.

"Air Namibia is rolling out the blue carpet to stimulate traffic growth and ensure access to the continuous expanding markets in the mining sectors, tourism, conference and incentive markets, fishing industry and leisure travellers along the Namibian coast," it read.

The first flight on this route will be on October 26, and flights are scheduled three times a week on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
