Senior citizens should not pay clinic fees: Kamwi

RUNDU - Health and Social Services Minister Richard Kamwi says no senior citizens, orphans and vulnerable children should be charged user fees at State health facilities.

Speaking during a fundraising dinner for older persons in the Kavango Region on Thursday, Kamwi said officials in the Ministry are hard at work, in consultation with the Ministry of Finance, to amend the law requiring senior citizens and orphans to pay for services at health centres and hospitals.

While the consultation is in process, Dr Kamwi has issued a directive to his officials at reception points not to send away senior citizens, orphans and vulnerable children for not being able to pay user fees.

"My Ministry is committed to the provision of quality, accessible and affordable health and social services to our older persons, and we will go an extra mile to ensure that their rights are protected and promoted," stressed the Health Minister.

The dinner was held to raise funds for the establishment of a traditional show house to promote traditional ways of living.

The show house will be a tourist attraction for the region.
