Ministry saves the day for Namcol students

LUQMAN CLOETE

ELEVEN part-time Grade 10 College of Open Learning (Namcol) students at Berseba village and surrounding areas will write their final exams following the intervention of the Education Ministry.

The intervention followed a report in The Namibian last week headlined 'Blunder ruins students' exams'.

Aggrieved parents had told The Namibian that their children had discovered shortly before the final external examinations that they would not be allowed to sit for exams because of a registration blunder.

The parents had already paid the examination fees in April.

Yesterday, Karas Regional Education Deputy Director Cille Mostert confirmed that the Examination Board had decided to allow the students to sit for their final exams.

A teacher at the Ecumenical Community School (ECS) at Berseba, Salmon Dawid Goliath, who handled the examination registrations, allegedly forwarded the part-time and fulltime students' registration forms in the same envelope to the regional education office.

However, officials in the examinations registration department denied having received the part-time students' registration forms.

The Namibian has established that Goliath will be hauled before a disciplinary hearing.

Namcol Director Harold Murangi thanked the students' parents for complaining about the registration blunder.
