Croatia squad trains on Austrian grass

ZAGREB - Croatia's football squad for the Euro 2008 championships is leaving nothing to chance as it is training on grass imported from Austria which is hosting the event, an official said Tuesday.

"We have imported 700 square metres of Austrian grass," which was laid on the terrain in the northern Adriatic town of Rovinj, Miljenko Sakoman, of the national football federation, told journalists.

"We were preparing the terrain in Rovinj for a month," he added.

The preparations kicked off on Sunday when the first seven players left for Rovinj.

The rest of the squad is to arrive by Wednesday.

Coach Slaven Bilic labeled the first match against Austrians, to played on June 8, as the "key one."

At the European championships finals, which are to be held in Austria and Switzerland from June 7 to 29, Croatia will face Germany, Austria and Poland in Group B.
