Namibia in great comeback

THE Standard Bank Namibian Under-15 team staged a great recovery to beat Zambia by 119 runs in their African U15 Cricket qualifying match over the weekend.

Namibia batted first but were soon in trouble as Zambia's opening bowler Tyron Toms ripped through Namibia's top order.

Toms started the slide by running out Wian van Vuuren for seven runs and then removed three Namibian batsmen for ducks in quick succession.

He bowled Jason Davidson and Namibian captain Gerhard Lotter, and had Edwin Reed caught behind for another duck.

When Namibian opening batsman Henkie van Zyl was bowled for five, the home side was struggling at 5/17.

Gerhard Erasmus (22) and Dehann Landsberg (40) however came to the rescue of the home team with a fine partnership of 56 runs.

Zivago Groenewald continued Namibia's revival with a fine innings of 77 runs off 68 balls, which included five fours, while Christopher Coombe added 19 runs as Namibia were all out for 198 runs off 45 overs.

With half the team out for only 17 runs, it was a great comeback, which eventually swung the match Namibia's way.

Toms was Zambia's top bowler, taking 4/28 off eight overs, while Yasin Bangliwala took 3/38 off nine overs.

Zivago Groenewald continued his fine form as a bowler when he dismissed two of Zambia's top order batsmen and with his twin brother Shalako Groenewald and Christiaan Labuschagne also getting amongst the wickets, Zambia were soon struggling at 27/4.

Their opening batsman Gibson Kandela and Saidi Malama temporarily stemmed the tide with a 23-run partnership.

Shalako Groenewalt however provided the breakthrough by dismissing Kandela for 26, while Edwin Reed grabbed two wickets to leave Zambia struggling at 50/5.

Any hopes of a Zambian comeback were dismissed when Gerhard Erasmus was introduced to the bowling attack.

The leg spinner broke through Zambia's lower order by taking four wickets for only six runs in three overs to give Namibia an emphatic 119-run victory.

Namibia will now progress to the African U15 Cup final in South Africa later this year, where they will play against the winners of the Central and North Western African competitions.

Uganda won the Central African qualifying competition, while Nigeria, Gambia, Sierra Leone and Ghana still need to play out in the North Western qualifying competition.

Laurie Pieters of the Namibia Cricket Board expressed relief that Namibia won the match after they were in deep trouble in the beginning.

"Namibia got a big fright after our top order collapsed, but our lower order stabilised the innings and won the match for us.

The groundsman left quite a bit of green grass on the pitch and Zambia's opening bowler Tyron Toms bowled extremely well to dismiss our top order.

But Zambia's batsmen were not a match for our bowlers and Gerhard Erasmus wrapped up the victory with some fine bowling," he said.

The Namibian team manager Johnny Heynes said he was encouraged by the character of the team.

"They showed great fighting spirit to come back and win the match.

There is a lot of depth in this team and although I don't know our opponents at the final, I am very positive and think we can do well," he said.
