Karate Zen wins 2008 championships in Cape Town

KARATE-Zen Namibia walked away with the most medals at this year's Karate-Zen International Championship held in Cape Town recently.

Of the 288 medals up for grabs during the tournament, Namibia collected 68.

These included 24 gold medals, 18 silver medals and 26 bronze medals.

Apart from Karate-Namibia, 18 other teams competed for the remainder of the medals in the competition.

Namibia was comprised of dojos from Windhoek, which collected 15 medals, Luederitz with 7 medals and Oshakati with 46 medals.

Among the best achievers of the championship who received gold medals in both kata and kumite are Constance Cloete (girls under 11), Reginald Andrews (boys under 11), Shola-May, Monde Simasiku (girls under 12), Megane Cupido and Shaun Boshoff (boys under nine).

Other gold medallists include Sylvia Iyambo in kumite (girls under nine), Oster Lifalaza in kumite (boys under 11), Freddie Mwiya Jr.

in kata (boys under six), Marti Tasha in kumite (girls under 10) and Lily Mwiya in kata (girls under eight).

The Namibian victory is significant in view of the fact that the South African team had 29 national team members on their side.

The Karate-Zen team of 66 karatekas was led by Shihan Gert Husselmann and Sensei Freddie Mwiya.
