Mountain biking, duathlon in capital

THE second MTC Cross-Country Mountain Bike Race will be held on Saturday.

The race starts at 14h00 and registration starts at 13h00 at the start line, which will be south of the storage yard of the Roads Construction Company on the Western Bypass opposite Unam.

There will be signposts for the riders.

The race is on a cross-country track laid on in the bush.

The length of the track is 6,7 km and a certain number of laps have to be cycled depending on the category.

Each lap is approximately 25 minutes.

This track is technical and will require a lot of skills in bike handling, gear ratios and a reasonable level of fitness.

Interesting competition is expected among the women this time around, with Elanor Grassow and Sopia Snyman both strong riders.

Others to watch will be Monika Grossman, Anja Schroeder, Stephanie Faul and Romy Noefke as they attempt the technical climbs and twists.

In the veteran class, the rivalry between Johnny Truter, Ian Grassow, Tokkie Bombosch, JC and Rolf Adriaan should also be interesting to watch.

Race organiser Tony Bassinghthwaighte said: "With 16 men racing against each other, the race this is going to be fun and with 33 riders in the Sport Class, the hole-shot is going to have the clearer track and here the track is going to be cluttered.

This means that competition is going to be great."

DUATHLON Meanwhile, a duathlon for children from four years and teenagers up to 20 years of age will start at the Municipal Swimming Pool from tomorrow.

Fruit & Veg City will once again be the main sponsor with fruit packs for all participants and prize money for the fittest in each age category.

If participants are involved in any two events from tomorrow till the end of August, they will qualify for a final prize.

"It's about finishing and gaining points, it's not just about being first," said race organiser Charmaine Shannon.

The race on Friday starts at 14h00, but registration will be done from 13h00.

The body markings and race briefing will be done at 13h45.

The registration fee is N$20 per child, but there will be a N$5 discount for every extra child in a family.
