Inspired gymnasts return from SA

NAMIBIAN artistic gymnasts recently competed against South Africa and Wales at the SA WAG International in Durban, South Africa.

Ramona Beukes, Kimberly-Ann van Zyl and Chloč Hansen participated in the senior section while Simone van der Hoeven, Michelle Solomons and Leana Koehne participated in the junior section.

They were accompanied by national coach Juliana Simonfi and team manager Dongina Risser.

Risser also judged the beam apparatus section.

In the vault apparatus section, a gymnasts needs to perform two vaults of which the average is taken into account for the final score.

Beukes achieved a 12.95 for the first vault (her highest score achieved in an international competition) and 11.85 for the second vault, which gave her an average of 12.40 and earned her the silver medal, despite an injured knee.

Kimberly-Ann van Zyl's score on the vault was a 13.40.

This equals her best score achieved on this apparatus in an international competition.

Hansen also achieved her highest vaulting score of 11.45 in an international competition.

On the uneven bars, Van Zyl earned seventh place with a score of 9.90, which is a tremendous improvement on the last score she obtained at an international competition.

Beukes was unfortunate with her score of 8.95, as she fell and did not hit her routine as thoroughly as she could.

With a much-improved score of 8.85, Hansen achieved her best score at an international event.

On the beam, Beukes achieved a 11.80 score with a fall (losing 0.80 points) and was placed seventh, while Van Zyl maintained a score of 10.35 with three falls (losing 2.40 points) and costing her the bronze medal on this apparatus.

On floor, Beukes was placed sixth with a score of 11.50, which included a fall while doing her new element, a double back pike salto (D-element, worth 0.40 points).

Van Zyl was placed fourth with a score of 11.95, which is also her highest score achieved on this apparatus in an international competition.

Hansen was placed ninth with a score of 10.45.

In the overall section van Zyl was placed seventh with a total score of 45.60, her highest overall score on the international scene, while Beukes was placed eighth with a total score of 45.20.

Hansen was 10th with her score of 41.00, also being her highest overall score achieved in an international competition.

In the junior section, Michelle Solomons was placed eight overall with a total of 41.20, Simone van der Hoeven ninth with a score of 40.80 and Leana Koehne (competed only on two apparatus) was placed 13th with a score of 21.25.

Beukes and Van Zyl are very grateful to Bank Windhoek, which is helping them to prepare for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in India.
