Eichab in third Icelandic chess win

THE most successful chess player in Namibia, Charles Eichab, the 2007 national champion did it again when he won the third Namibian, Icelandic International Chess Tournament recently.

Eichab only suffered one defeat against Kevin Ellis.

He compose himself and fought hard in the last three games to score 6.5 out of 8.

He was followed by Candidate Master Otto Z.

Nakapunda with 6/8.

In third position came Bernd Kruckeberg, from Germany with 5.5/8.

This year, a rating section system was introduced for participation and prizes and the chess players loved it.

Section A - Rating 1600-2999, Section B - Rating 1300-1599 and Section C - Rating 900-1299.

The masters in Section A could compete at their level with no easy points to score.

Every game was a hard fought battle of wills and only the stronger could succeed.

In the B Section it was equally true as Simon Muchinenyika from Zimbabwe scored 7/8 in first position followed by Jonas Theto with 6.5/8 in second.

Kauzepa Hoveka was third with 6/8.

Top seed in this section Julian Isaak rated 1 535 ended 6th with 4.5/8.

In Section C , young chess star Immanuel Gariseb, scored 7.5/8, two points ahead of the field.

He escaped a narrow encounter with upcoming Tjitjiri who came fourth overall with a draw.

In second place was 2007 Champion of The Weekend Chess Academy Christo Retief, with 5.5/8, followed by Lishen Mentile who scored 5/8.

The prize giving ceremony was attended by Dr.

Vilhjálmur Wiium from ICEIDA who handed over the cash prizes and lucky prizes.

Cash prize winners were as follows: Winners Section A: 1st Place: Charles Eichab cash prize N$2,000 2nd Place: Otto Z.

Nakapunda cash prize N$1,200 3rd Place: Bernd Kruckeberg cash prize N$800 Winners Section B: 1st Place: Simon Muchinenyika cash prize N$1,000 2nd Place: Jonas Theto cash prize N$600 3rd Place: Hoveka Kauzepa cash prize N$400 Winners Section C: 1st Place: Immanuel Gariseb cash prize N$600 2nd Place: Christo Retief cash prize N$400 3rd Place: Lishen Mentile cash prize N$250 The Namibia Chess Federation would like to thank ICEIDA for the sponsorship of this event amounting to N$18,000.

ICEIDA also sponsored the FIDE fees of the Namibia Chess Federation for 2007-2008 amounting to N$12,400.
