Tuesday, May 13, 2008 - Web posted at 11:37:14 GMT Warriors in busy weekends CORRY IHUHUATHE Brave Warriors will be in involved in back-to-back international encounters as they face Zimbabwe in the African Nations Championships return leg match on Saturday, before taking on Kenya in a World Cup qualifier in less than two weeks. |
|
Both matches will be played at the Independence Stadium. Namibia played to a goalless draw against Zimbabwe in the first leg in Harare. The competition is being held for the first time and both countries will be vying to make an impact in the early stages. In fact, Namibia will have their backs against the wall, as their opponents will be out to attack to obtain the away goal and push them into the next round of the competition. The competition strictly caters for players in the domestic leagues. Namibia's team manager Tim Isaacs, told The Namibian Sport that they will stick with the same players that were in Zimbabwe, but the squad will be beefed up later next week to prepare for the Kenya encounter. "We will have more or less the same players for this Saturday's match who travelled to Zimbabwe, but the coaches hope to have some of the professionals before the Kenya match," he said. Some of the players were allowed to play for their clubs at the weekend, but were back in camp yesterday to prepare for the match on Saturday. Namibia Football Association's (NFA) head of competitions, Titus Kunamuene, yesterday confirmed that the Independence Stadium will be ready for the two matches, despite the current renovations which are being carried out in some sections at the stadium. A Fifa inspector was in the country at the weekend to inspect the progress made regarding the renovations, as it did not conform to certain Fifa standards. Fifa was initially concerned about certain facilities which needed upgrading to conform to their standards, in order for Namibia to host Kenya in a World Cup qualifying match at the end of this month. But yesterday, Kunamuene said the stadium will be ready for Namibia's match against Zimbabwe. "All I can say is that the stadium will be ready on Saturday," he said. * Meanwhile, the Namibia Premier League (NPL) has also made changes to its fixtures calendar by moving the match between Civics and Orlando Pirates for tonight at the Khomasdal Stadium. The match starts at 19h00. On Saturday, there will only be one match which will see Black Africa hosting Fedics United of Keetmanshoop at the Khomasdal Stadium at 19h00. All the other matches were moved to Sunday to avoid any clashes with the international fixture. On Sunday, log leaders Ramblers will host Tigers at the Ramblers Stadium, with the match scheduled for 15h00, while another promising encounter between Civics and African Stars is billed for the Khomasdal Stadium at 17h00. Pirates will be in action again on Sunday, when they play Sport Klub Windhoek at the SKW Stadium at 15h00. Eleven Arrows travels to Oshakati's Independence Stadium in the north, to take on Oshakati City at 14h00, while Blue Waters will meet Mighty Gunners at the Kuisebmund Stadium in Walvis Bay, also at 14h00. |
