Africa Day observed in Omaheke

GOBABIS - Close to 100 people including members of the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) on Saturday held a street march from Epako township to the SME Industrial Park at Gobabis to mark Africa Day.

In his keynote address, acting Omaheke Governor Brave Tjizera said on May 25 1963 the then Organisation of the African Unity (OAU) was established to collectively fight for the liberation of the African continent.

According to him, it is through these unselfish sacrifices of African forefathers that Africans could all celebrate this day in peace and harmony today.

"However, without this peace and harmony, we will never accomplish the common aspirations of our forefathers for a united Africa," he stressed.

Therefore, said Tjizera, participants in Omaheke should feel honoured to celebrate this day with their brothers and sisters from the San community.

The day was linked with the 'Song of the Shamans' San cultural festival and an exhibition by San people in the region.

Tjizera said the events underscored the important role of the San community in achieving unity and sense of pride and belonging.

"Consequently, the primary objective of the exhibition is to provide opportunities for the San people to showcase, market and sell their arts, culture and humanity," said Tjizera.
