Party employee in hot water over accident claim

LUQMAN CLOETE

AN employee of the Karas Swapo Party Office at Keetmanshoop allegedly submitted a fraudulent claim to the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund.

Elias Stephanus allegedly inflated the injuries he purportedly suffered in an accident on the medical claim form.

It is alleged that he also forged a local doctor's signature to verify the fictitious injuries.

It is not known how much money the MVA Fund paid out to Stephanus.

Stephanus last week appeared in the Keetmanshoop Magistrate's Court on a charge of theft, alternatively fraud, forgery and uttering.

He was released on bail of N$1 000.

The case was transferred to the Windhoek Magistrate's Court, where Stephanus will have to appear on July 4.

* Also in the Keetmanshoop Magistrate's Court, Cedrick Kingsly Damaseb (30), an employee at the Engen Depot at Keetmanshoop, made a brief appearance on a charge of fraud.

He is accused of stealing N$31 000 from his employer over seven months.

Damaseb, who was responsible for the sale of Engen products, allegedly collected cash and cash cheques for his personal gain.

Although Damaseb was not allowed to receive any cash or cheque payments, he did so by allegedly bypassing the company's direct payment system.
