National Council feels neglected

ABSALOM SHIGWEDHA

MEMBERS of the National Council want the Ministry of Finance to treat the House of Review and the National Assembly equally when it comes to allocation of funds.

During debate on the money allocated to the NC in the National Budget, Swapo Chief Whip Jhonny Hakaye said he could not understand why the National Council was always given less money than the National Assembly.

N$39 million has been allocated to the National Council this year while the National Assembly got N$90 million.

"Why do some people want to close one eye of the Namibian Parliament?" Hakaye asked.

He called on the National Council's accounting officers to raise his concern with the Ministry of Finance.

Swapo MP Sebastian Karupu said the NC's budget allocation was not enough for the House to meet all its obligations.

He also called on fellow MPs to start summoning ministries and other Government institutions whenever recommendations from the NC standing committees were not implemented.

Swapo MP Hafeni Ndemula said the NC should thank the Ministry of Finance for increasing its allocation this year.
