NBC slammed in National Council

ABSALOM SHIGWEDHA

THE Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) has come under heavy fire in the National Council.

A Swapo MP this week accused the corporation of refusing to cover some Government programmes.

Johnny Hakaye alleged that the NBC had chosen to be used as an institution of broadcasting insults directed at national leaders, despite the fact that it was funded by the State.

Hakaye said the NBC was not living up to its motto, 'No Better Companion'.

"What a motto.

Are they really educating," Hakaye asked.

He claimed that the NBC had chosen to regard some Government events as news and some not, and asked why they should decide for the public what was news and what was not.

Hakaye said it seemed the NBC was not managed by a policy.

"NBC is being driven by certain forces.

There is no policy," Hakaye alleged.

Swapo MP Rosalia Sibiya said although the idea of having NBC television news in indigenous languages was to make sure that even elderly people could stay informed, these broadcasts were too late for them.

Hakaye and Sibiya made these remarks during debate to the Ministry of Information's budget.
