No bail for Mariental assault suspects

LUQMAN CLOETE

THE two Mariental residents who allegedly ambushed and brutally attacked the 50-year-old Max Meyer at his plot a few weeks ago have been remanded in Police custody.

During their brief appearance in the Mariental Magistrate's Court yesterday, the two, charged with assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, assault by threat and attempted murder, were not asked to plead.

The two are Albertus Jacques De Waal (30) and Wolf Dieter Kuhn (21).

Their case was postponed to July 13 for further investigation and to allow them to obtain legal representation.

The two were informed they could launch a formal bail application.

A tip-off from the public led to the arrest of the suspects on Friday morning.

Meyer's family had offered a reward of N$20 000 for information leading to the arrest of his attackers.

Meyer was found at his plot with multiple wounds to his head and body, allegedly inflicted with a tyre lever.

It is reported that Meyer was ambushed when he returned home and was hit with the tyre lever.

Earlier, Police reported that one of the suspects allegedly had made death threats against Meyer before the brutal attack.

The suspects also face other pending charges of illegal poaching and possession of an illegal firearm.
