Feathers fly over gender violence

ABSALOM SHIGWEDHA

SWAPO MPs in the National Council yesterday were at odds with each over the use of the term "gender".

When Swapo's Dorothy Kabula said that gender-based violence was caused by women, her party colleague, Hilma Nikanor did not take kindly to this, while Henock ya Kasita, another Swapo MP, supported Kabula, spurring her on: "Tell them".

Kabula went further and said some women were misusing the word gender in bargaining for positions or promotion.

"We tend to forget that there are other gender-related issues," she said.

Kabula told the House that she had observed that some gender-based violence reported in the media was not caused by men but created by women.

This was clearly to the delight of a number of male MPs, with Ya Kasita continuing with his: "Tell them."

"They are being created by women just to destroy or sabotage one another.

Men are just influenced by us women to satisfy and act on our behalf," Kabula continued.

Clearly, Nicanor was not pleased with this, insisting that men were the source of gender-based violence.

"The only thing we (women) know is calling each other names and promoting failure to one another," Kabula persisted.

She made these remarks during debate on the N$264 million allocated to the Ministry of Gender and Child Welfare in the National Budget.
