NamPort faces graft charges

ADAM HARTMAN

MORE than 100 Namibian Port Authority (NamPort) workers marched to the entrance of their employer's headquarters at Walvis Bay yesterday to make allegations of unfair and corrupt practices.

A bulky petition was read and handed to NamPort's Managing Director, Sebby Kankondi, by Namibia Transport and Allied Workers Union (Natau) shop steward Suoma Itope.

The petition alleged unfair labour practices, dishonesty, intimidation, wastage of resources and even corruption.

Natau recommended that the Anti-Corruption Commission launch an investigation into the affairs of NamPort, and that those found guilty should resign.

The management was given seven days to respond to the demands in the petition, or face "unspecified action" by the employees.

Kankondi said the petition would be considered according to the appropriate policies and guidelines.

He declined to comment further.
