Walvis Bay elects new leaders

ADAM HARTMAN

ULIKA Nambahu has been elected as the new Mayor of Walvis Bay, taking over from Derek Klazen.

John Uushona, who is also the regional co-ordinator of the Namibia Transport and Allied Workers' Union (Natau), takes the seat of Deputy Mayor from his National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW) counterpart, Adelaid Kandjala.

Both Klazen and Kandjala are now serving on the Town Council's Management Committee, with Klazen elected as deputy chairman.

The Chairman of the committee is Jeffrey Naobeb, who took over from former Mayor King Mandume Muatunga.

Muatunga no longer serves on the Management Committee.

Other members of the committee are Hedwig Mandean and Benson Uakumba.

The new mayor highlighted unemployment, HIV-AIDS and gender-based violence as the major challenges for her term of office.
