Kankoshi said these roads were proposed to the Ministry of Works some years ago but no construction had started yet.

However, Kankoshi said he was pleased to note that most of the roads proposed by CDCs were featuring in the Development Budget for 2008/2009 to 2010/2011.

He said most areas in the Oshikoto Region are sandy and all-terrain vehicles are needed to reach them.

"Now that some of the roads are going to be gravelled, this is going to be a relief to most of our communities to be able to reach clinics, schools and other social services easily," he said.

He was speaking during debate on the allocation for the Ministry of Works.

Swapo's Henock Ya Kasita said it seemed some road contractors were using poor quality materials, as many of the new roads were not strong enough and very narrow.

He said roads should be built with strong materials to last longer.

Willem Appolus (Swapo) called on the Ministry of Works to rebuild and repair all the roads that were destroyed by recent floods.
