Friday, May 16, 2008 - Web posted at 11:44:21 GMT What's Gone Wrong With Swapo? ON May 09, 2008, I and a friend heard from the grapevine in Katutura's ever-open shebeens that a meeting of RDP to be held in Okuryangava would be disrupted by the "political hooligans", by all means - with or without the Police - because a person who would speak was regarded as "politically dangerous" by the ruling party taking into consideration the way he hit hard at that party's leaders at Edundja in Ohangwena Region. |

We only ended up having one question to answer, which is: "What has gone wrong with Swapo Party?" The once vibrant product of the liberation movement has become embroiled in political blunders, gaffes, lies, threats and violence in the country where it has claimed to have "brought independence, democracy, reconciliation, peace and stability". This is a joke. One is then tempted to take into consideration Prime Minister Nahas Angula's quip to some of the firebrand leaders in a trade union affiliated to the ruling party when he attacked him for allegedly applying a "hands-off" approach on the State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs). PM Angula emotionally reacted to those vocal unionists by questioning their "liberation credentials" and referred to them as "the running dogs". One is also tempted to interrogate or question the democratic credentials of some ruling party leaders of today, namely; Jerry Ekandjo, Michael Mwinga, Alpheus Muheua, Evilastus Kaaronda, Elijah Ngurare, Charles Siyauya, Armas Amukwiyu, Erastus Utoni, Usko Nghaamwa and Penda ya Ndakolo. Considering that all the above-mentioned Swapo Party activists are all men who have made up a notorious squad that leads a campaign of hate, aggression, violence, racism and discrimination. The important elements of our democratic principles are suppressed, discredited, done away with and/or abused with impunity. At political rallies or meetings, the said hardline activists could be heard calling for the public to hate, condemn and reject others by doing the following: cutting their tails off, blocking their meetings, movements or campaign visits in the villages, town and locations, defend Mugabe's authoritarian regime and its gross human rights violations, apply guided democracy and a 'no regime change' policy in Southern Africa, accuse the residents of the Caprivi Region as secessionists, those in possession of divergent views as tribalists, enemies of the nation, spies and criminals and ordering people not to buy from their political opponents' shops or give them water … etc. If the latest incident, led by Mwinga, of blocking the RDP meeting, is a well-coordinated campaign of Swapo Party, then we may find Kenyan-Zimbabwean types of violence in this country soon. How on earth can the Republic of Namibia consider some areas/public places "no-go zones" for parties other than Swapo? Does that mean our people who live in abject poverty are political fools who do not need to be disturbed (hear different views)? Come on, Swapo! Mwinga and his cohorts can easily set this country ablaze as he cares more about which ways of political propaganda can earn him a ticket to be promoted. Does that means all Swapo Party leaders have sold their principles and are now dancing to Mwinga's tune? E. Tjiharauva Otjozondjupa |
