Lister 'Demonising' Swapo And Mugabe

FOR a long time, I have not written to The Namibian newspaper because I have just been observing its behaviour.

It is a pity that after all these years it seems that Ms Gwen Lister remains unrepentant to the reality that Namibia and Zimbabwe are in Africa and not in Europe.

As can be seen, the politics of Namibia seems to be repeating itself once again.

I remember before Congress of Democrats (CoD) was to be founded in 1999, Unam academics, NGOs, the media, especially the white-owned media such as Ms Gwen Lister's The Namibian were doing their best to demonise President Sam Nujoma and Swapo Party.

At the time it was about the third term, Congo participation and supporting of Angola's MPLA in its war against Unita's Jonas Savimbi.

The Namibian newspaper allowed itself to be used as a launch pad in attacking Swapo by letters and Internet white boards or forums, as they were called.

Eventually Ms Gwen Lister caved in to pressure and regulated these whiteboards by ensuring that people register their names before using the service.

In 2007 a new Party called Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) was established.

Ms Gwen Lister together with some academics and NGOs in this case the NSHR have been doing their best to demonise President Sam Nujoma and Swapo Party.

This time they have launched a new pad called SMS service in which NSHR and Gwen Lister themselves are authors of the same SMSes they claim to be a genuine expression of people.

Nowhere has this been more pronounced than at the issue of RDP and Zimbabwe.

It is so obvious that in a country where Swapo commands the majority support would be daily demonised in a newspaper that supposedly only receives SMSes from just NSHR and RDP.

This is a lie that even Ms Gwen Lister knows only too well.

I would therefore appeal to Ms Gwen Lister and her colleagues in the white community to remember that Africans too have rights in their own countries and continent.

Even if we were to agree with you sometimes this does not mean that we should feel obliged to support you as you openly side with the whites in America, Canada or Britain at the expense of the blacks who are suffering from the actions of white governments.

Speaking under correction, I don't think there is any newspaper in Europe owned by Africans which thrives on insulting ruling parties in Europe or an SMS slot aimed at promoting demonisation of a ruling party or its leaders? I have no doubt that Ms Gwen Lister and other whites are full Namibians or may even be Africans but sometimes their behaviour casts doubt on their being part of us.

That is the concern many of us have and for which we will support the likes of the Mugabes, Nujomas, Geingobs, Ekandjos and Ngurares.

Be part of a team and do not allow yourself to be used by exterior forces in Europe and elsewhere.
