Grysblok gets community library

TANJA BAUSE

A NEW library has been opened at the Oponganda Community Centre in Grysbok, Katutura.

Besides books, the library offers the first 12 'theme boxes' developed by the National Early Childhood Development project.

The theme boxes are the brainchild of teacher Loes Ballaard, who has worked with many pre-primary schools in Katutura and discovered that teachers often lacked materials to properly teach the children.

These boxes contain games, toys, photographs, tools and an instruction manual on different themes of interest to children such as water, Namibia, wild animals, plants and others.

Pre-primary teachers can borrow the theme boxes from the Oponganda Community Centre, much like books from a library.

They can then copy certain aspects of the theme boxes to build up resources at their own schools.

The library is housed in a shipping container donated by Germany.

The Netherlands is paying for workshops at which pre-primary teachers will be trained in the creation and use of theme boxes.
