Thursday, January 31, 2008 - Web posted at 7:25:03 GMT Cancer Apple '08 Project launched The eighth Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project was launched in Windhoek yesterday with the theme "Eat Healthy. |
|
Live Healthy. Prevent Cancer". Over N$3 million has been raised for the Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN) since 2001 through this project. Last year alone 832 000 apples were sold countrywide bringing in an amount of N$700 000. To encourage schools to take part, Bank Windhoek will award a total of N$22 500 to the schools that sell the most apples in the pre-primary, primary and secondary categories. To give even the smallest school a fair chance of winning, the ratio between the number of pupils and the number of apples sold will be calculated. Apples can be ordered through participating schools or at any Bank Windhoek Branch country wide. On February 15 the bank will also host a nationwide "Shave-a-thon". This "Shave-a-thon" aims at getting the Namibian public to either shave or colour their hair in solidarity with all the patients who have lost theirs due to chemotherapy. Food connoisseurs will also once again have the opportunity to enter their favourite recipes in the Apple Recipe Competition, where the main ingredient should be fresh apples. The money raised will be used to assist cancer patients and their families. Patients who are receiving treatment live in House Acacia and are cared for by professional nursing staff for free. CAN also conducts annual pap-smear and breast examinations nationwide. Although the cost of the apples has increased to N$3 per apple, only the best quality apples will be supplied. |
