Damaras aim to strengthen unity

ADAM HARTMAN

THE word 'Gao', which refers to the Damara king, will be removed from the official title of the annual Damara Gaob Festival to make way for a more "inclusive and acceptable" title.

The annual festivities at Okombahe are aimed at demonstrating Damara unity.

Chairperson of the Damara Gaob Festival Organising Committee, Elifas //Khoaseb, told The Namibian that a proposal had already been made by Justice //Garoeb of the Damara King Council.

He said a meeting scheduled for Karibib this Saturday would officially determine and accept the new name.

//Khoaseb indicated that the new name would be more like 'Damara Annual Cultural Festival [Committee]', as proposed by //Garoeb.

He said despite last year's apparent division and questions over the legitimacy of leadership amongst the Damara people, there was an overwhelming feeling of unity at last November's festival.

More than 2 000 people attended the event.

//Khoaseb said that even though the festival's name would change, the Gaob royal lineage would still be acknowledged.
